amazon rainforest destruction

The amazon rainforest is one of the largest areas of natural wild rainforest in the world today but it is threatened with destruction like never before and this makes the struggle to fight the destruction of the Amazon rainforest one of the most important conservation issues today. Since the 1990s alone there has been a reported 40 per cent increase in deforestation in the Amazon which has prompted the World Wildlife Fund to call for 'urgent, sweeping measures to save this area of global importance'. Such a strong reaction indicates the importance to the world of this area of natural wonder, yet it has not stopped up to 10,000 square miles of forest being destroyed in Brazil between July 2001 and June 2002. This is up from averages around 7,000 per year in the 1990s. The cause?

Many think it is due to rising soy production in the region which is the world’s largest producer of the crop. But other factors are also contributing and these include livestock grazing and a combination of legal and illegal logging in the forest. Also land is cheap in the area and this only encourages farmers to settle and carve out land for their needs from the rainforest by cutting more trees. Solving the problem of Amazon rainforest destruction is very difficult and most people see the need to protect the remaining forest while at the same time improving the lives of the people who depend on it
